It was Suika who spent seven years learning to make nitric acid alone in the ruins. She eventually revived her companions, allowing them to continue the journey. With Ryusui joining later, they finally boarded the completed rocket with Senku, Kohaku, and Stanley. They headed to the moon where they uncovered the truth about Why-Man. In the end, the mastermind was never seen or heard from again, leaving the fate of the device resolved.

Origins and Creative Vision

Dr. Stone began when writer Riichiro Inagaki presented story proposals to his editor, who chose this premise because he could not predict how it would develop. Inagaki approached South Korean artist Boichi around the time he finished storyboards for chapter three. Inagaki, a fan of Boichi's art, wanted a protagonist defined by ambition and hard work rather than supernatural power, drawing inspiration from Agon Kongo in Eyeshield 21. He was personally fascinated by science as a child and sought to create an entertaining story with compelling themes. Inagaki worked remotely, sending storyboards through his editor. Boichi grew captivated by the idea of a beautiful Japan where nature remained untarnished after humanity turned to stone. Both creators conducted research into scientific accuracies during development.

Publication History and Global Reach

Serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from March 6, 2017, to March 7, 2022, the manga was collected into 27 tankōbon volumes. By March 2026, it had over 20 million copies in circulation and won the 64th Shogakukan Manga Award for the shōnen category in 2019. Viz Media licensed the series, releasing English volumes from September 4, 2018, to June 3, 2025, while simulpublishing began on Manga Plus in January 2019. The anime adaptation by TMS Entertainment aired on Tokyo MX starting July 5, 2019. The Petrification Event and Initial Awakening

In June 2019, a mysterious green flash petrified ostensibly all humans for 3,719 years. Senku Ishigami revived in April 5738 to find civilization erased by time. He established a base camp to study the petrified remains. Six months later, his friend Taiju Oki woke up, and they discovered nitric acid could reverse the stone transformation. They developed a compound to revive others, starting with martial artist Tsukasa Shishio and classmate Yuzuriha Ogawa. Tsukasa opposed rebuilding the old world, believing it tainted, and sought to rule through strength. He extorted the revival formula from Senku and attempted to murder him, leaving Senku for dead before establishing his own faction.

The Kingdom of Science and Global Quest

Senku recovered and discovered a tribe living on the planet, eventually forming the Kingdom of Science. They learned their village was founded by Senku's adoptive father Byakuya and five other astronauts who were in the International Space Station during petrification. After defeating Tsukasa's Empire, they found platinum left by Byakuya to mass-produce revival fluid on an island inhabited by the Petrification Kingdom led by Ibara. Defeating Ibara revealed the location of Why-Man. The team built the ship Perseus, traveled to North America to encounter Dr. Xeno and Stanley Snyder, and then moved to South America via the Andes and Amazon. A second petrification wave hit after a battle with Snyder's forces, leaving only Suika alive for seven years until she revived her friends. They built a rocket for Senku, Kohaku, Stanley, and Ryusui to reach the moon.
